How to Make your Own Nontoxic and Eco-Friendly DIY Homemade Household Cleaners

I spend less than $20 on home cleaners that last me MONTHS - and here’s how you can do it too!

I’ve narrowed down my cleaners to a multi-purpose cleaner and a disinfectant, and I make them myself which saves me so much money since I’m not buying a bunch of random cleaners that essentially all do the same thing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you have all of the ingredients in your house ,and while they may be a little bit strong scented, the smell will deodorize your air and also clean amazingly. My recipes for both are in the caption and in case I haven’t convinced you yet:

  • These cleaners are using all natural ingredients.

  • These cleaners help reduce the amount of plastic packaging in your home.

  • These cleaners are safe for pets and family.

  • AND last but not least - These cleaners can be adjusted to whatever works for your household. For example - you if you really want to help with the smell you can add your favorite essential oil drops!

My homemade house cleaner recipes 👇🏻

🫧 Vinegar Cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1 Spray Bottle (I use a 32oz bottle, but you can use whatever size works for you)

  • Distilled White Vinegar

  • Water

  • Optional: essential oils, lemon peels, orange peels, pine needles, etc.

Directions

  1. In your selected spray bottle combine the vinegar and water in a 1 to 1 ratio.

  2. Mix well.

  3. Use on the desired surfaces!

That’s it! I know, easy right?

Optional: If you would like to help ease the strong odor, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the mix. Another way you can do this (my personal favorite way), is by using lemon or orange peels and soaking them in a jar of vinegar for about 1-2 weeks prior to making your vinegar cleaning solution. This allows time for the vinegar to infuse with the citrus and makes the cleaning solution smell not as “vinegar-y”. You can also use this method with other natural ingredients like rosemary sprigs or pine needles.

Where to use it:

Remove dirt, grease, and grime by using vinegar cleaner on tiles, glass surfaces, sink, stovetops, & stainless steel.

Where NOT to use it:

DON’T use on wood, natural stone surfaces, or electronic devices. The acidity from the vinegar will ruin the finishes on wood, natural stone, and electronic devices.

🫧 Disinfectant Cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1 Spray Bottle (I use a 32oz bottle, but you can use whatever size works for you)

  • Isoprobal Alcohol (Be sure to use 70% or 90% in order to disinfect properly)

  • Dish Soap (use whatever you prefer)

  • Water

  • Optional: essential oils

Directions

  1. Fill your spray bottle with a 1:1 ratio of water and Isoprobal Alcohol.

  2. Add 1 Tablespoon of dish soap to the mixture (add a little less if you’re using a bottle smaller than 32 oz - you can eyeball this).

  3. Mix well.

  4. Use around your house to clean and disinfect.

  5. Optional: Add your favorite essential oil to the mix for added scent.

Where to use it:

Rub countertops, doorknobs, light switches, handles, and anything else you touch on a daily basis with a cloth soaked in the alcohol mixture.

Where NOT to use it:

DON’T use on wood or coated leather surfaces. The alcohol will ruin the coating on leather and the finish on wood surfaces.

It’s as simple as that!

These two cleaners do the trick to keep my home clean from dirt and grime - and they also save me so much money! If you try them out, let me know what you think!
