Is Dropps sustainable or is it greenwashing?

Welcome to “Sustainable or Greenwashing” series where I’m sharing if brands and products are actually what they say they are.

Is Dropps sustainable or is it greenwashing? 🧺

Dropps was founded to take the plastic packaging out of laundry detergent.

They’re a B-Corp, vegan, they source sustainable palm oil, and are currently working on getting their USDA biobased preferred certification. 🪴

Sticking true to their mission of having plastic free packaging, their boxes are made of 100% recycled content and are completely plastic free.

For labor and manufacturing, Dropps shares some information in their 2022 impact reports regarding fair wages and compensation. Also in the report is a LOT more detailed information on their initiatives, like their partnership with nonprofit Oceana which helps with ocean conservation and their donations of excess product to nonprofits.

BUT, let’s about the elephant in the room - the pods. Pods are traditionally made with Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) which is a water soluble component, but generally people consider PVA a type of plastic. Because of that, it has a controversial background. Obviously we don’t want PVA in our waterways, and not all water facility treatment plants are able to filter PVA which was researched in *this study. It’s a sticky subject, but after going down a rabbit hole I found that often times this pod coating will end up becoming a sort of sludge which has to be scraped from water facility treatment plants and thrown away anyways. 👀

So is Dropps sustainable or is it greenwashing?

SO with that being said, I do think Dropps is a better option than traditional pods and I like their efforts, BUT depending on your stance on PVAs, they may not be the best option for you. I don’t think they’re greenwashing, and overall I would say the brand itself is pretty sustainable to me. 🌎

XOXO,

Krys
