Is Function of Beauty sustainable or is it greenwashing?

Welcome to “Sustainable or Greenwashing” series where I’m sharing if brands and products are actually what they say they are.

Is Function of Beauty sustainable or is it greenwashing? 🌎

Function of Beauty is customizable hair care & was founded by MIT grads who believed everyone deserves custom products.

Products are Paraben free, Phthalate free, Sulfate free, Vegan & PETA cruelty free. They do use palm fruit extract which is basically palm oil, so I emailed them directly and they confirmed it is certified to RSPO standards.

As far as packaging, boxes are made with partially recycled materials as well as paper certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. & their bottles are made of 100% recycled plastic with aluminium caps that can be recycled. As far as manufacturing and labor, as well as community work, I couldn’t find anything.

I was surprised to find that one of the founders has a PHD in sustainability, so I was surprised not to see more eco initiatives.

So is Function of Beauty sustainable or is it greenwashing?

Overall, I don’t think this brand is greenwashing, HOWEVER, it’s definitely not a brand I would call sustainable. I’d love to see them implement more transparency on their manufacturing & see additional community work to give back - but what do you think? 🤔

XOXO,

Krys
